HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING YOUR PRODUCT?
I began creating beaded jewellery in 2015, and doing the occasional markets here and there. That was fun for a while, but it wasn't fulfilling my need to be 100% involved in the creation process - from start to finish. I craved more! I began to play with resin. At the end of 2016 I did a crazy thing.. I took a huge gamble & quit my job of 20+ years! Without the support of my hard working & understanding husband it just wouldn't have worked …& I'm so much happier now. It wasn't long after that ResArtDesigns was born. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I was inspired by the company Dinosaur Designs way back in my twenties ... they were so bold and fresh with their colours and designs ... and to this day they push the boundaries of jewellery and art, or merge them even, to create pieces that are timeless and elegant. That's what I want to emulate. So when the opportunity came up 3 years ago to purchase some resin and pigments from a friend I jumped at the chance to try my hand at it! WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION? Nature of course inspires me no end. I appreciate the beauty of flowers, and flora in general, from afar like most people but when you get up close and really inspect how these flowers form, and the perfect repetition in their design... that’s when nature blows me away. That’s why I deconstruct flowers and leaves in my work, so the delicate beauty of nature can be appreciated and hopefully pondered. WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE TO OWNING & OPERATING YOUR BUSINESS? Time management & focus! Especially a home business. I’m easily distracted by house chores, our chickens, veg garden jobs & the dog! But I find that those distractions create a balance sometimes. Also I do find it hard marketing myself..because I am a fairly private person I find it a little confronting to go onto the social media platforms with a post ‘hey look at me and what I’ve made!’ Haha. But I’m slowly getting used to that. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? The hours & flexibility of when to work is a huge plus. I can work around my family so I feel like I’m still a part of their world, and I can work at night when the creative urges mostly seem to kick in. Is that a maker thing?! |
Hi my name is Nina and I create from my studio on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
I use sustainable and environmentally kinder eco resin than normal resins in my designs, which is USDA approved 37% bio based. I also use 100% recycled & sustainable Australian made Argentium Sterling Silver 935 in my handmade earring hooks. I source all of my components through Australian based companies. The flowers, leaves, shells etc are collected by me locally, and ethically. Any ‘non-found’ inclusions are sourced from local florists and/or markets at which I am already present. Rest assured there can be no two exact mix of pigments, no two leaves or flower and no two of my pieces will ever be the same. Your item will ALWAYS stand out in the crowd.
