Paul Fitzgerald - Visual Artist
How long have you creating Visual Art?
I have been working on this style of painting for the past two years... I am a bit of a late bloomer! How did you get started? At the age of 50 I decided to make a dramatic career change and follow what inspires me. I enrolled in a Cert III to see where it would take me, and I discovered that through art, my love of nature could be imortalised in a creative way. I have continued study though TAFE QLD in a Diploma and plan to continue toward a Degree in Visual Arts. What is your greatest inspiration? Nature and it’s scale is a huge inspiration, the open ocean, vast mountain ranges, expansive deserts but also the intricacies that form these have been an element in my life since I was a child and were often my reason for travel and adventure. What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own creative business? As this is all new to me, I will fill you in as I go ;) I know that time management and organisation can be tricky for me sometimes, but being guided and setting deadlines can help concentrate the flow of creativity in me. What is the best thing you love about what you are creating right now? I love the process... Taking something from an idea, researching, discovering the complexities of techniques that may be involved in getting the desired finish. Then going for it! |
I am interested in the processes involved in creating my work and so I like to be personally involved at all stages. In regard to finishes whether it be paints, pigments or glazes, I have a need to know where they originated and why. The final decision about how to utilise a particular medium or material is made when I know I can produce something that I find unusual or intriguing, that it will engage and inspire me. I like my work to initiate questions even an element of confusion, what is it, how was it made, what is it made from? I prefer to work on a larger scale when able, to become immersed within it, to feel, see and smell the experience. I like to create 2D and 3D images that encourage the audience to approach them to investigate the composition and colour to find that the piece is more than it seems from a distance and consists of intricate details and textures. It isn’t what it may appear to be at first glance. The solitude that time in nature offers has allowed thought and reflection to show me that although I am such an insignificant being on Earth my art, actions and words can affect our world positively or negatively.
