Nature's Forge
I am a self taught Jewellery Artist. My journey began in 2009 and I am continuing to strive to expand into areas and skills that are unique to this field. My inspiration comes from the world around me and I am a firm believer that you cannot fully capture the beauty found around us so why not incorporate real items into my work to capture that beauty forever.
I specialise in nature themed and whimsical designs and also create pieces using real (ethically obtained) butterflies, insects and snake sheds(moults). Most of my designs are one off pieces making them unique and treasured pieces. Many of them are designed around a theme or tell a story. I have had my work featured in numerous beading magazines as well as having designer profiles published in national magazines. My work is available through some of the regional galleries and I have also won a number of design awards both locally and internationally for my work. There are a variety of mediums and styles that I work with on a regular basis: freeform resin work; nature art; steampunk; electroforming; upcycling and costume design. How long have you been making jewellery?
I began my journey in 2009 How did you get started? My journey started from a period of grief, depression and chronic pain and was my way to cope with all that was going on, it soon became a passion and joy for me. What is your greatest inspiration? My greatest inspiration is the butterfly, what seems to be the end of the world for the caterpillar becomes the beauty of the butterfly. That is what I feel jewellery making has done for me, it has transformed me and allowed me to be and create awesome things. What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business? My greatest challenge is juggling the balance of home life, family, my faith, domestic duties, volunteering and feeling like I still have some time for me. What is the best thing about owning your own creative business? The best thing about my business is that I make things when I want and how I want, I go wherever my imagination takes me that day and I can loose myself in the process. Where is your creative work taking you in 2020 and beyond? In 2020 I am aiming to further develop my jewellery skills and to start work on some larger costume pieces. What is your dream project? One day I hope to create a pair of large moving wings to wear at events. I want to stretch myself to look into the mechanical and lighting aspects of costume work. |
