KIM CAN DRW
Hi, I'm Kim from 'kim can drw' (Art & things by Kim Schubel) I'm an art school drop out who went on to study interior design, art education and graphic design... and in some way I guess I'm using them all. I have 2 creative labels, one SCHUDIO with Cassie Doherty where I design textiles to be made into fashion, homewares and accessories. And the other where I paint earrings, canvases, custom art and murals. I do the graphic design and social media for both of them and have my hand in every other aspect I can. I'm un-apologetically a control freak and a non stop creative. I'm also a cat mumma, a plant lady, a sci fi movie nut and a true crime fan. How long have you been creating your art?
I've been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember, I was always that kid colouring in and drawing for fun! I started my label kim can drw a couple of years, mostly on Instagram to show my friends the projects I was working on. I started making earrings at the beginning of 2019, as a way to get something creative made in an achievable time frame. I love painting on a canvas but sometimes with all of my creative things going on and general life, i don't get time to spend working on one painting. So painting earrings became a way to do a completed piece in a short time. How did you get started? I don't even remember what made me think of it, but I decided I would try painting on timber at some stage and somehow that led to ordering timber pieces to paint and turn into earrings. I just ordered a pack to try it out, and before I knew it i was painting earrings whenever I got half a chance to. I love making them. I still create art in many other forms too, as I've always done. From canvases, to textile designs for my other label schudio, to murals and custom art. I've always been an artist and can't imagine not working on some sort of project. It's just in my DNA, it's something I can't help. What is your greatest inspiration? I'm inspired by lots of things, I suppose nature is one of my bigger inspirations. I love plants and florals and animals. Especially things that are organically shaped, they are easier to get a way with mistakes lol. I also love working on projects that have urban (street art) and or fantasy elements included in them. I'm a massive nerd when it comes to the sci fi and fantasy genres, and I love creating art which has otherworldly or animated features. My style is a little bit street art/ a little tattoo art / and a little animated (graphic art). What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business? Managing my time and turning off. There are never enough hours in a day to get through what I have mentally listed for myself and before I know it the week has passed and I'm not half way through it. I want to make all the things and do all the things across my 2 small businesses; but I have to still go to a part time job, be a wife and homemaker and friend and daughter and sister, its a struggle at times. What is the best thing about owning your own creative business? I love being able to set out to achieve something I see in my head and making it come to life. Whether its on a wall, a canvas, a textile or an earring, to imagine something and then hold it in your hand is surreal and wonderful. Its even better when somebody out in the world loves what you are doing, sees it and connects with it.. that's always a buzz for me. |
