Jaya Maya Jewellery
Hi, my name is Natascha Schwarzer and I am the creative mind behind Jaya Maya.
All my jewellery is handmade by me in my tiny studio in Far North Queensland. I am inspired daily by the lush tropical beauty of my surroundings.
Resin lets me create jewellery in vibrant bold colours and chunky organic shapes which reflect the natural beauty of the rainforest and the Coral Sea.
Copper appeals to me with its warmth and lustre and ability to be formed into a plentitude of shapes. The creation of a patina is a fascinating process for me as the metal seems to have a life of its own.
How long have you been creating your jewellery?
I have been creating jewellery for many years, but started getting serious about it and expanding my skills about a year ago.
How did you get started?
I started with just a few tools and my hand collected saga seeds, and I have been exploring new techniques and adding tools and materials ever since. Once you get the bug it's hard to stop!
What is your greatest inspiration?
The vibrant beauty of my tropical surroundings is my greatest inspiration. Everything here in Far North Queensland is a sea of colours, from the turqouise of the Coral Sea to the deep lush green of the mountain ranges, the vibrant green of the sugar cane and the red, coral, pinks and oranges of the tropical plants.
What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business?
My greatest challenge at this stage is getting my work in front of potential customers.
What is the best thing about owning your own creative business?
Being able to indulge my passion for creating things whilst being able to have a healthy balance with family life.
