Jane Jones Jewellery
How long have you been making jewellery?
For more than a decade on and off, but more seriously over the past few years, between wrangling two small humans and my job at a university. How did you get started? I have experimented with all sorts of crafts since I was young. I studied pottery while living in London and that led me into metal clay jewellery, which in turn led me to silversmithing and selling at markets in London. I'm largely self-taught but I try to complete a night course or two each year. There's no end in sight in terms of how much I have to learn (or how much money I can spend on tools!). What is your greatest inspiration? My customers! I love the fact that each piece I create sparks joy for someone, somewhere. Sometimes if I'm feeling uninspired I read some of my customer reviews and that never fails to help get my mojo back. In terms of my jewellery, I'm drawn to simple forms and shapes. I'm interested in sustainability which often drives my design choices. What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business? For me, it's managing the balance when trying to scale up from a hobby. What is the best thing about owning your own creative business? I love every aspect of creating jewellery, from being alone to making a racket with a hammer to seeing my pieces worn. So I feel lucky to have the chance to turn this passion into a small business and the freedom that comes with that. |
Jane Jones is a jeweller based in Sydney's Inner West.
She creates unique pieces in sterling silver, often adding texture with metal clay that she forms and fires in a kiln. Originally from New Zealand, Jane started learning the art of silversmithing while living in London, and sold at markets before moving to Australia in 2017. Jane’s style is always evolving as she discovers new techniques and inspirations. She describes her current range as minimalist in style, each piece designed to be worn every day, yet last a lifetime.
