I have been creating in some form all my life but wood has been my primary material for 45 years. How did you get started? I had dabbled in pottery in my early 20’s but transitioned to wood and have never lost the passion to create in timber. I often incorporate silver, bone, stone and gems in my work and enjoy the challenge. What is your greatest inspiration? The natural environment and the wonderful organic shapes mother nature offers. What is your biggest challenge owning and operating your own business? Paperwork and technology is the definitely the challenge. Would much prefer to be in my workshop. What is the best thing about owning your own creative business? Creating and making beautiful objects and knowing that people who buy my work really love it. My love of timber and woodcarving is influenced by my love of nature and organic shapes.
My background is in Graphic Arts and Fine Arts and over the last 45 years I have developed my individual style and have held solo exhibitions undertaken worldwide commissions and exhibited Australia wide. My Awards include "First Prize" - 2014 Wootha Prize, "Design Excellence Award" - 2014 Wootha Prize, “Commended Award” - 2020 Makers of the Year - Australian Wood Review. I use Australian and exotic fine timbers including Red Cedar, Huon Pine, Rose Mahogany and Tasmanian Blackwood, and carve individually designed functional forms and sculpture. The flowing, organic, convoluting shapes in my work are inspired by nature andthe collected seed pods, leaves, feathers, stones, bones and shells gathered serve to keep the images fresh in my mind when I return to the workshop to create original and unusual jewellery boxes, bowls, furniture and sculpture. My approach is to first design a piece of work and make a series of sketches or clay models before selecting the ideal timber from my treasured supply that will become a work of art. I am environmentally conscious and have salvaged much of the raw materials himself and believe that every piece of a once living tree should be used. With my small offcuts of wood my wife Michelle creates beautiful pendants adding an element of nature to each one. I have work in collections in Australia and overseas including Boston, Colorado, Carolina, Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Japan, London & China. I especially enjoy creating boxes made from reclaimed and recycled timbers that incorporate eye catching features which can be treasured as a special keepsake or used to hold a precious item. |
