Bellicious lifestyle encompasses the modern woman as she evolves through different stages in her busy life. Relaxed, stylish and feminine is the best way to describe the Bellicious range.
Armed with scissors, fabrics and a desire to create her own versions of the designer clothing her big sisters wore, Sue Kirk created her first fashions at the age of eight. Raised in a busy household of five children, Sue eagerly gathered tips from her mum and grandmother who were both sewers and her great aunt who worked as a costume designer in Melbourne.
Now the mum of a household of active young boys and a little baby girl, Sue is the creator and designer of Bellicious lifestyle, which provides fashion to the modern woman looking for beautiful, comfortable clothing that is flexible to suit her lifestyle.
Sue gets inspiration from the women she meets and loves to interact directly with her customers and so is often seen at quality markets and trade shows throughout Australia.
How long have you been making Bellicious clothing?
I have been making clothes under the name of Bellicious for 8 years.
How did you get started?
When I started to have a family I was surprised at the lack of decent maternity clothes that were available, so I began to make my own and selling them at the Eumundi Markets. My idea was to make maternity clothes that didn’t look like maternity clothes but had the flexibility to be worn as your body changed.
What is your greatest inspiration?
I love fabrics, particularly silks, fine cottons and natural fibres, and so a lot of my inspiration comes from the fabrics. I will see a piece of fabric and already have it designed and made up in my head!
What is the greatest challenge owning your own business? Wearing so many different hats on any one day is always a constant challenge. There’s hardly a moment in the day where you’re not thinking about your business and that can sometimes be really hard to juggle around the family. I am so lucky to have a really supportive husband and a family of boys who have grown up with and have an understanding of what I do. For all of it’s challenges though, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else!
What is the best thing about owning your own business?
I love the flexibility and lifestyle it gives me and my family. I am also totally in charge of every decision about my business & the direction I want to take. I can try new things & look for new opportunities and if it works, it’s extremely rewarding and if it doesn’t, back to the drawing board. I also love that I can sell directly to the customer. I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of people loving what I do and appreciating the effort that goes into designing and making the clothes.
