Annica Malmkvist Art
Annica is a versatile and prolific artist from Sweden who has lived and worked in Brisbane since 2005. She is very inspired by animals, nature and the beauty of her surroundings.
Her artwork showcases an ability to tap into a diverse range of creative energies and she loves to create artworks the breathes beauty and joy. She experiments with colour, shapes, texture, intricacy, patterns and allows the artworks to naturally evolve in the creative process without necessarily knowing the end result.
To Annica, creating art has always been a channelling of what needs to be expressed onto the canvas or paper, very much like meditation. She has studied fine art, cartooning, design and 2d animation and she has been painting and drawing since she was a little girl.
Annica’s roots and the Scandinavian nature is a big inspiration to her, and in recent years her “new” home, Australia, has also influenced her expressions and she is excited to explore this merging of two very different countries and cultures even further in her art.
How long have you been creating your art?
As long as I can remember. It has always been my number one way to express myself and also a great way to relax and unwind. It's a part of me and something I do as often as I get a chance.
How did you get started?
I guess getting started on a more professional level was back in the late 90's when a University in Sweden approached me and asked if I wanted to make some illustrations for an article. Studying art and animation at different schools and universities also helped to get my creations out there though group exhibitions and different projects.
What is your greatest inspiration?
Nature! No doubt! I'm also inspired by design, kids drawings and music among other things.
What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business?
The marketing and promotion part, and I'm sure many other creative souls agree with me when I say that.
What is the best thing about owning your own creative business?
It's a great way to spread my passion to others! And to be able make an income on something that is such a big part of myself is a nice feeling. That my art is actually adding value to other people's lives and putting a smile on their face or triggering some kind of emotion in them.
