How long have you been making felt & nuno felt?
Just about 5 years. How did you get started? I have always been crafty for as long as I can remember. Sewing, jewellery making, quilting, I have always loved creating things with my hands, but I was yet to find my medium. About 10 years ago, I saw a felting demo at a craft show in Sydney and this piqued my interest. I bought some materials there but let them sit for a few years in my goodie stash as it was too luscious to dare playing with! A couple of years later, as I was between jobs, I decided to get a proper training and found a nuno felting artist in my neighbourhood in Sydney who was giving classes. It was love at first sight! The softness and array of colours of the wool, the silk fabrics, the originality of the finished products, it is very natural and organic, the supplies, the technique… What is your greatest inspiration? I love colours, and I am always looking around to find ideas for new combos. It can be by looking at people in the street or queuing down at the supermarket, but it can also be while looking at a bird, a landscape or just because I picked a piece of silk which is so pretty, I have to make it into something unique and colourful. What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business? Realizing it is not a hobby anymore and that I can’t be felting and at the same time spending the day in the kitchen cooking… although we need to eat! Staying on top of everything in the accountancy department. What is the best thing about owning your own creative business? Having no boss telling you what to do is pretty nice! And I am very lucky to have a very supportive fan in my partner who believes in what I do and encouraged me to start my own business. I love the freedom I have to create pieces that are unique (and colourful!) and the flexibility of working in my own terms. |
Agnès (the A in a&b originals) was born and grew up in the region of Brittany, in the west of France and migrated to Australia in 2005 with her family. She moved to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with her partner Bernard (the B!) at the beginning of 2019 and started her new venture after many years working in corporate. After trying a range of creative mediums, she found her true calling in the form of felting and more particularly nuno felting which appeal to her love of colours and tactile sensations.
